Sujam Packgoats ~ beginnings

When I was young, my parents bought a pygmy goat that quickly became part of my backyard circle of friends.  We had many good times together growing up, so I promised myself that when I became an adult, I was going to own goats again.

A few years ago, time and opportunity allowed me to search for that backyard friend of my childhood dreams.  I found several.  And they weren't pygmy size.  I fell in love with a bunch of random dairy bucklings that wanted a job other than the dinner table.  While educating myself on the proper care of goats, I stumbled across hunters using goats as pack animals and became intrigued.  All of a sudden, camping in the back country again seemed possible, even as I inch ever so closely to retirement age. This new activity gave the boys and I goals to strive for.  Learning tricks and training tips from many websites and videos increased my confidence to teach these boys the fun in hiking.

Further research brought me to Dwite Sharp and his Paradise Ranch goats. I purchased a couple wethers from him to step up my game as a packgoat enthusiast.  What a difference breeding makes!  I truly love my first group of boys (pictured on the left), but the pair I bought from Dwite Sharp outshine my auction boys in every way.  They are a year younger, yet are the same size and weight.  They also have a natural desire to connect with people and seem to know what is expected of them.  Just like dogs and horses, good breeding makes a difference.

While I did not intend on becoming a Packgoat breeder, an opportunity to purchase breeding stock from Dwite's herd was hard to resist.  From there on, my adventure with Packgoats went into warp speed!  Now I not only hike and camp with the luxuries that packgoats provide, but I have joined those who are dedicated to provide the packgoat community with heathy, strong, dependable goats bred for the purpose of packing. I love to share my knowledge and adventures with these awesome creatures!
